Yes it is very likely that the PS3 will be backwards compatible with the PS2.

Xbox will never surpass sony's systems as long as microsoft mostly ignores the gaming tastes of the Japanese market... Which, by the way, is why the PS3 is a much safer bet to go on if you'd like to get the new DDR releases.
Well, if they don't stop releasing them here all together. I can't believe Konami didn't announce an 05 release in the US.
Oh and don't forget that the PS2 came out over a year before the Xbox.

All this I know.
I'm not speaking worldwide, but here in the US the XBox is getting more sales than PS2 recently due to pretty much Halo 2.
The XBox appeals to an American audience much better than Japanese. As long as XBox can keep kicking out the Halo 2's and the Ninja Gaidens, it's going to sell better.
No, I don't really care which system sells more, I'm not a fanboy, I own both systems.

I'd like to see those US sales figures you have, because I haven't seen them.
The point is that the PS2 has sold many many more units than either the Xbox or Gamecube combined, and has been out over a year before them, and thus most people that wanted one already have it.
Oh, and I own all three... Well, and plus nearly every other console. I'm a little obsessed.

I think I saw it in an EGM or Game Informer.

Round 2 of the Sony v Microsoft war should prove interesting. Sony had three big advantages in Round 1, they came out a year earlier, the PS2 was backward-compatible with the PS1, and the PS2 played DVDs right out of the box (allowing many of us to argue that buying a $300 PS2 was a better investment than a $200 DVD player). Microsoft had trouble in they early going, but was helped by the fact that the PS2 came out a year earlier, and people had replenished their disposable income a bit. Microsoft has enjoyed a few big advantages over the last 5 years, Xbox Live, which provides a constant revenue source, the built in HDD, which allows folks to customize in-game music, and Halo.
But in round 2, it looks like Microsoft is going to release first, but won't be backward compatible, and won't have a HDD. Sony looks to be going more online-focused, with the Cell processor. Sony has traditionally locked up the better exclusive games, but can they keep that up?

As far as the DVD player goes that is actually why the PS2 became so dominate in Japan. At the time it was released barely anyone owned a DVD player because they were very expensive... The PS2 was cheaper and played games. So basically everyone owned one as their DVD player. Good move by Sony.
In this next generation it is really going to come down to who has the exclusives, as the difference in hardware power will be smaller. We'll see what happens. These companies have a lot of money to throw around.

There's a rumor floating around that since Xbox2 will be out long before the PS3, they'll release Halo 3 the same week as the PS3 to eat into Sony's sales. Sony did almost the same thing when they released a flurry of A-list titles during the Xbox launch period,

OY VEY!!!!... The whole PS, PS1, PS2 and the fourth coming PS3.. Please inform me on some facts about this "New Machine". I'm a Micro-Soft Bonnie-lass..
So, what will this "new machine" bring? Please enlighten me. Will it draw me a bath before I get home? will it flirt with me (Hello, I'm single!)?, will it rub my back when I've just had too much ddr? Will it show me movies as if I'm at the IMAX theater? Will it drive me to work, listen to me b**ch about retarded co-workers? will it come with a built in Cable box, Tivo and Vacuum? Oh and will it hold my hair back when I'm puking my brains out after a night of partying?
I know these might sound like the most retarded questions, but hey, I had to go there.. The point is, the fact that there is an argument over the Play station series and XBOX ( I won't even go there with Gamecube as it lacks the amenities we've seen from both PS2 &'X') should just be waved off. Different people favor different consoles, and the fact that PS3 may be released should say what really? That there you go again putting money together to buy yet another console just to play the same games you were previously playing on the previous console. So what will happen with the old ones? You will sell them, or put them up as ancient “artifacts” from the year 2001? Did you keep the packaging so one day 30 years down the line you can sell it on Ebay for a significant amount of money ( Hello, Atari!!)? ???It's pointless. I would refer a child or a grown-up to buy PS3 only if they have never owned a previous console.
Oh and the last Question... Will this new machine have an ATM???
