After playing DDR for a few weeks...I started thinking why not some Heavy Metal or Black Metal in the midst of the techno, rave, salsa, "hip-hop", funk etc..... Choices
1 - TooL - Ticks and Leeches This would easily fit into the 8 or 9 step category Straight 16ths + split jump accents....for the first minute ( wouldn't have to be an entire minute but hell)
2 - As I Lay Dying - 94 Hours Jordan Mancino's drum beats are fun to play and i'd think they'd transfer well...especially that 32nd note run in the middle
3 - Lamb of God - Laid to Rest Awesome song...and 16ths pretty much throughtout the entire song...stamina builder/drainer
4 - The Black Dahlia Murder - Closed Casket Requiem Just had to put it here
5 - Slayer - Angel of Death For the 32nd note bass tom run...and that scream at the begining

Which is exactly why I think Konami could rake it in with ganre-specific DDR releases, with music licensed from the Sony catalog. DDR Latin, DDR country, DDR Metal, DDR Hip-hop, etc. I realize that there's a bit of work to be done to re-mix each song down to 1:30-ish, and you have to do 8 sets of steps per song, but you could easily fill up two years+ of releases by doing a major genre every quarter. (No, they won't split Death Metal, Speed Metal, Goth Metal, etc into different releases, you'll just get one metal release)

I'll give this a shot!
Electronica, hip-hop, salsa, disco, pop, j-pop and the like are all designed to be somewhat danceable. I mean, they almost universally adhere to a 4/4 beat for easy grasp and retention when shaking what you got.
Metal. Wow. When Tool got popular I started letting a friend borrow the cd - I was bored with them by then. DDR to the odd timings would be a fun challenge, but I'm just not sure it's right for Dance Dance Revolution. There are also likely to be licensing issues with what you've mentioned - how many of those groups want to risk their GGGRRR-ANGRY! cred by appearing in a dancing game with the Village People?
I would suggest tinkering with the free DDR clones that they release for the PC, if you really want to have metal songs in a dancing game. I have played with putting some industrial rock into one of the clones, and it did turn out to be kind of fun.

Tool, As I lay Dying, BDM, and one of the my favorite bands ever, Lamb of God in one post!!! Yeess! Although me being the metal nerd I have to correct a few things. None of those bands are really black metal. Tool is alt-rock, with an artsy twist. As I Lay Dying is basically metal-core, hence the Ozzfest prospects. Lamb of God, yes, is basically heavy metal... Black Dahlia is probably the closest thing on here to black metal because of some of their promiscuous lyrics, but they're closer to a death metal band due to many of their european influences, those of which don't include Emporer, Darkthrone, etc. And Slayer, alongside Metallica and 'Maiden are basically the founders of what metal is today. And for Pyro, Prodigy is awesome.

If they somehow put Mindless Self Indulgence on DDR, that would rule.

I'm not really that sure on what all the sub genres metal has split into...I just know what i like...as much as I'd like to see some Deicide, Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, or Napalm Death to have a step file...there wouldn't be much variation....and they would probably all be 9 steps....Insane Double Bass!...In Flames would be a good candidate...just because some of their songs have that natural "bounce" to them...and maybe some old School Diamond Head....just trying to move your feet to the board tapping... ....

Well the thing about bands like Deicide, Napalm Death and Cattle Decapitation is that there's extremely little variation in any of the songs. I'm not a big fan of grind/gorecore metal, it's just too linear for me. Some old In Flames stuff, like the Jester Colony or Whoracle would be great fun, but their new nu-metal stuff would just be... nu-metally. Blah. Down with nu-metal!! (IE Korn, Staind, Slipknot, all those turd-bands.)

Mindless Self Indulgence would take some very creative cutting to make acceptable for a DDR game. My bias is toward industrial rock. (Not so much the noise/EBM, but the Chicago style). Lyrically, I just can't see much of the metal or industrial rock fitting with DDR's mostly candied theme. Even if "The Whistle Song" made it into the game.

Well yes, this holds very true. With metal's often occurring theme of blasphemy, murder, and hate, I don't think metal would do too well in sales as Konami would hope, which I'm sure is one of their biggest concerns. We can always dream...

A great idea, but Konami is very commercialised. I am a huge fan of music, including metal, but half of the bands you guys are mentioning I have never heard of. For overseas markets, Konami would have to go very mainstream to appeal to the public. Rammstein, Korn, System of a Down etc. would be the general kind of band on the metal version. Its not the best, but its the only kind of metal (cough) making an impact on the market.

But for, ahem, metal enthusiasts, metal truly lies within the dark lands of Norway, Scandanavia, Sweden, and many other European countries. However, the US is starting to make some decent metal bands... Lamb of God, Unearth, Black Dahlia Murder, Bleeding Through, Mastodon, etc. The bands you mentioned are what we like to call "Nu-metal," though System of a Down isn't too bad.

Yeah. I would have to agree many of them would have to be mainstream, but there ARE some songs that definatly are Pg rated enough (or can be remixed in a pg version lol) that could go on there. Suck though that most likely they wont do this, even though the only people i know that play DDR are Punk rockers and Goths.
What about punk though? Even if its crappy mainstream Punk its still better than 100% dance songs.
....THough. this is the 100 dollar question...
Why did they never make the song "lollipop" by Aqua into a DDR song? AHH! Its WAYY to perfect be one and they wont do it! (pout)

I have ALWAYS wanted prodigy songs on DDR. I friggin LOVE Prodigy. There are so many awesome songs. And why can't I ever find a dance club that will play prodigy??? I mean come on.... other than their singles.....they have some killer dance tracks that I would most definetely shake my ass to. lol.
I have Prodigy backed up as the music for all the games I can change the music with... aka, tetris worlds and tony hawk games.... god it makes the games so much more fun. *smiles a lot*
as far as MSI, that would be interesting, lol. But they would have to seriously edit those tracks. There IS a MSI song out for stepmania.... I believe it is B*tches. yeah.
I don't know if I would be down with having a metal version of DDR. I love my metal and my rock, don't get me wrong... but it would mess with my flow I think. But, that's just my opinion.
And this *looks at quote* .....I cringe at the thought.
