Unfortunately, Ultramix is one of the least newbie friendly DDR games out there, but you can do it.
Pick on song on standard (preferrably with a lower difficulty rating (3-5).
Go to ddrfreak.com or ddruk.com and pull down the stepchart for it.
Use the Training mode to slow the song down (5 is full speed, take it down to 2 or 3) and work out how your feet need to move to pass the song. If you hit a part that is causing you difficulty, you can have training mode play just those measures. If the rhythm is causing you problems, use the handclap feature. If you hit some part where you can't work out how to step, post the song name and the measures (maybe with a description of where in the song it happens) here and we'll help you work through it.
Practice, practice, practice.
As you are able to pass the song at the slower speeds, start speeding the song up.
You'll probably need to do this for three or four different songs before something will click and you'll be able to handle standard mode pretty well. You'll have to repeat the process again at Heavy mode.
