I just started DDR about two weeks ago. My friend, Kelli, has DDRmax2. She got me hooked right away. So i ended up buying my own, but because I don't have PS2, I got DDRultramix for x-box.
I have a hard time passing some of these songs on light. Most of them I get A's and B's in...which is good, for me, but I really would like some suggestions! ^_^ My friend, Kelli, said that you can do it while jumping to the beat. That really helped me for a while (helped me beat hysteria on light! w00t! *n00b* xD) but it's not really working anymore. I need to find a new technique. There's no way that I'm going to pass some of these songs on standard at the rate I'm going. I must be doing something wrong....
*sigh* Stay with me, here, though. I'm a n00b ^_^ What exactly are 9-footers and 10-footers? WHAT IS A FOOTER!?!?!?!?!?! *tears hair out*
Sorry...I'm a silly American. You know. Can't keep up with the "lingo" xD

lol. Ok first a footer is the little thing on the bottom left hand screen. It's the level in which the song is at. A 9 footer (also known as a cata) is a song with 9 feet on in the bottom left... a 10 is 10 feet on the bottom left. Get it?
Ways to improve... Practice... Not much else to it...
Oh! Don't return to the center square. Hope that helps

Nah it's all good, you wouldn't know.
I totally forgot that Ultramix uses 'bars' instead of 'feet'.
Really, the only way to get better is to practice and develop your own style.
One thing I do to improve my scoring performance is to use the bar while I play, but I didn't do that until I was already one of the top players in my area so I had all sorts of stamina and accuracy built up. It just lessens the load on your body so you can play faster and more accurately.
Of course, if you only play home versions, it wouldn't apply to you.
So yeah, just practice, your muscles will get used to some of the stuff you need to do. It took me 100 days from starting out to passing my first "level 9" song, so don't worry about slow progress.

Well, yeah, considering that I only have the home version that probably won't do me much good. xD I've only seen DDR in an arcade once ever. It was in a place in Minnesota when I went to visit my cousin for Christmas. At that time I had never even heard of the game, let alone had the nerve to try it. But I'm regretting that now...
But I am proud to say that I can get an "A" on a 4-foot song ^_^ wh00t!...that's good enough for me

Wow that's pretty good! Took me about 2 weeks to beat a 4 with an A... Then again... I can only play in the arcade about 5 times a week... So maybe that's not so bad xD
Do you play online?

I don't have x-box live, so no...I don't play online. Maybe when I get MUCH better then i'll give it a try but right now, that's a definate no...
And i've always wanted to try it in an arcade, but I don't want people to laugh at me because I suck so badly xD

Everyone who has replied is correct, it just takes practice and getting your own groove. Your friend seems like someone who can do DDR pretty good, have her give you some more pointers or even have her mentor you, it wouldn't be a bad idea! Most of all, just practice and you'll be among the best!

Two things that can help you if your up 2 it.
1. Try to feel the beat, and get into the song as much as possible. DON"T THINK. This only slows down your response time *If that makes any sense.*
2. Try using Sudden and Shuffle together. This is a great way to work on your skills and something I have started to do recently.
