If you're playing on a low difficulty, Extreme 2 is a really good choice, since the unlock system starts you at a low level and gradually moves you up, and adds extra missions which can help add some extra depth to the game. (I found it fun even though I play at a higher level, but the first half of it was just kind of annoying)
If you're playing at a higher level, DDRMAX2 is a good choice as you can start on whatever difficulty you want without having to crawl your way through a load of beginner songs (although, I should point out that light and beginner are still completely accessible, so this works just as well for newer players.)
If, however, you're playing at a REALLY high level, then go for In the Groove. The difficulty of the songs get up to level 13, as well as adding more difficulty through the use of hands (3-4 arrows at once) and mines (Times where you have to be OFF an arrow), plus the songs average at about 30 seconds longer. This game does work ok for lower level players as well, however.
As for DDRMAX, I can't really say anything for because I've played like 2 songs off of it...
DDRExtreme, I have a hard time recommending due to the lack of dance play options. That means you can't turn off the corner buttons on your pad.
Think that's it.

max and max2 are good for beginners too... they are what I started on and I didn't have to mess with options...it was so simple and basic. Just play play play play practiice practice practice. I think a mission game would have just pissed me off beck then. Definetely hold off on the ITG until you have the ability to do standard in ddr... that would be my personal opinion though.

Well clearly, it depends on your preference. If you prefer to just play a no-bells-and-whistles, simple, straightforward DDR game, go for Max or Max2. If you want something a little different and more complex, go for Extreme2. Aside from the Dance Master mode on Extreme2, it only differs on the music (I.E. Edit, training, lesson mode are all in all of them). And again, I won't recommend ITG if you're a new player, and I will NEVER EVER recommend Extreme... But really, it all comes down to you...

Here's the order I'd recommend:
Max2 (Beginner mode, fast unlocks) Extreme (Again, fast unlocks, lack of "dance mode" [i.e. corner buttons turned off] not so much of a problem as a light/standard player) ITG (unlock code, good for building skills) Extreme 2 (Yes, unlocking is a bit of a pain ) Max (No beginner mode, 500 songs played to unlock everything)

I havent had much experience with the PS2 titles as I dont own any of them, I have played extreme at a friends house and my local arcade runs an extreme 2 machine (very anoying I might add) personally looking at the list and the reasons for each game I would probably favor Max, Max 2 or ITG (havent played ITG but really REALLY want to) that is of course just my personal opinion but from the look of extreme and extreme 2 its not somthing I would want to spend to much money on unless it was just to fill out my collection and add a few new songs, I doubt I would use them for my workouts.
hope this helps best wishes all.

They're all basically the same except for difference of songs. I would recommend Max2 to start with though because the songs unlock the fastest. After you get good and start playing on heavy, you'll wanna buy the other ones simply because of the bigger song selection.
