So, why do soft pads crap out? I have one with a foam insert and it only works for 20 or so songs before one of the arrows messes up. (I won't mention I got it off of EBay). I have this problem with all my mats. What makes them start to mess up? And my GOD is there anyway to stop/slow/fix it?
It's really saddening because one of the things I think makes DDR appeal to me is the fact I can do something.
Thanks.

I have a cheap-o MadCatz one with no foam insert and it's lasted me 5 months now. Don't buy them off EBay! Go to a local gaming store where you bought it and get one of those

I know we are all supposed to hate e-bay here and all... but the foam insert pad I got for like $15 off e-bay rocks! I mean... it has it's flaws... It's supposed to be dual compatible... but it will not work with the xbox. But I already have an xbox pad so the fact that it only wrks with my ps2 doesn't bother me. I'm just glad I can play my ps2.

I have a cheap-o MadCatz one with no foam insert and it's lasted me 5 months now. I had one of those. My first one lasted me a year-ish, then I got another one and that one lasted about 6 months, I got another which lasted me a month and now these(which while they are from EBay they shouldn't die so fast) lasted a day. seems like this one needs rest. More than 20 songs one of the arrows dies, but then I come back a day later and its fine again until 20. I must have issues with them.

Soft pads suck because there is no sense of feeling where you are. Plus they slide and fold while playing, regardless of anti stick stuff on the bottom

Soft pads have problems because the "stuffing" layer (that's the layer between the switch circuits) is necessarily very thin (to allow the switch circuit contact points to make contact), but that same thinness means the material isn't very durable, so as you're playing, it's stretching (making the holes wider, which leads to ghost steps), wrinkling (which can make it harder if not impossible for the contact points to touch, leading to unresponsive buttons), and tearing (see either of the above). Foam pads, like the ignition, try to minimize this by adding a support layer to the pad in the form of the thick foam insert. This works to minimize the stress on the stuffing layer by holding the main pad taut and giving it firm support.
Metal/plastic mats generally don't have lateral give in them, or the same "stuffing" layer, so they're not prone to breaking in this way. They're more vulnerable to dirt getting down in the switches, though (This goes for arcade pads, too).

I had a lot of probs with mine and i just discovered putting a board under it helps a lot the arrows quit messing up. The only prob i have now is it sliding around.

stick it to the board with rug tape. Rug tape rocks with soft pads.

My soft pad I got with my DDRUM2 has lasted for almost a year now the down and left buttons stick sometimes, I think I wil get another pad but I am not sure what I am going to get yet. Maybe I'll get something from wal mart and if it breaks with in the first 6 months I'll take it back and demand a refund hehehe that's what happens when you work there in returns for a year.

They have no support, they slide, they suck. Need I say more? They bust easily too, they last less that a year.

But the Konami Brand ones are okay to use. Other ones I find suck. I'm still saving for a metal pad.
