I'm probably going to be getting some dance pads before I leave tomorrow afternoon to go to Ohio, and I need to know how well the MadCatz Beat Pads work. I don't want to be stuck with anymore sucky dance pads that break after three days, or the buttons stick, or they're just plain crap. Any help would be appreciated.

It's my advice to go with something a bit more luxurious.
Mad Catz pads do not provide for optimum dancing. Their texture is less than desired for ability to fly around the pad.

MadCatz are better than Naki, but not as good as the "official" Konami or RedOctane. I've got the new RedOctane soft pad, and I've been fairly impressed with it (for a soft pad). Obviously soft pads aren't optimal for playing at higher levels, but I get the sense that portability is more of a deciding factor for you right now.

I have a MadCatz Beat Pad Pro (the one with the foam insert) and it works fine for me and has for about 2-3 months or so... as opposed to the 3 weeks I got out of my soft pads. Soft pad = bad. Foam insert = Good

I know I've said this several times before - but, I guess I'll say it again. The madcatz soft pad has worked beautifully for me. Both when I had just two soft madcatz pads (when I was new to ddr) and as of right now because I bought a $100 ignition pad and it broke after 2 1/2 months. I LOVE the ignition pad but it was not worth the replacement costs to me. I am still using my ignition dance pad, only I have taped down...firmly and securely a madcatz soft pad to the top of it. I have the luxury of a foam insert pad, and the cost efficiency of the madcatz soft pads. I am still on my first madcatz pad, since the death of my ignition - which was at least 4 months ago now.
This is the only product by madcatz that has my stamp of approval!

I should have mentioned that my soft pads were by Cosmo Interactive and Intec... neither which could withstand the wrath of my pounding feet. That was when I would play 20-30 minutes a day on standard.
Basically, if you want something that lasts, I agree with SSC on going with something a little more luxurious. I spent $60 on my foam insert pad, and it's lasted me longer than if I were to have bought three $20 soft pads. For playing on light/standard (I think that's the level you said you were at ngts) a soft pad will probably do you just fine for a while.
