I've been playing DDR for a while now, and I haven't been able to make that jump from standard mode to heavy mode. There are a few songs that I can do, but the rest of them just leaves me stumped and standing on the dancemat confused. Does anyone have any tips to help better read the arrows? Any tips on how to move your fee when there is tons of half steps and such flying at you? I especially need help in End of the Century. I hope that by the end of summertime that I can do that song on heavy mode.

End of the Century isn't the best song to start off with when learning to play heavy I know exactly how you feel, I get the same way sometimes... some things that helped me were: Start off with some heavy songs that only have 1/4 and 1/8th notes. It'll help you build up your stamina while still being able to read the arrows. It'll help you with streams as well. Play the same song over and over with more complex steps. Once you learn them for the one song, it'll be easier to read the steps for the others. Try some 10 footers on standard (without the expectation of passing them) Ie, play a song with like 250 bpm then go and play one with 125... the heavy with the 125 bpm won't seem to bad after that. Plug in the controller. Only use it for a bit to learn to read the arrows, but I find it helps. Other than that just practice... it'll come to you soon enough.

Practicing with the speed turned way down helps a lot too. Max2 gave me some difficulties with Take Me Away on Heavy until I turned the speed down and figured out the gallops. ;p

Go to DDRfreak.com and get the stepchart for the song you're trying to pass. Look it over while thinking about the music, and try to plan out how your feet will go. Always plan to alternate feet (LRLRLR) on heavy songs, as you'll rarely have the opportunity to double step. This will occasionally lead you to a point where you'll have to turn away from the screen momentarily. Once you've got your "routine" worked out, go to training mode and play the song with the speed slowed down to at leat a 3, maybe even a 2. Turn handclaps on if you're not getting a rhythm quite right. Work through speed 3 until you can nearly full combo the song, then up the speed to 4. Once you can full combo speed 4, you should be able to pass it at full speed (speed 5)

End of the Century is a nightmare for anyone crossing from standard into heavy,
Do easier songs lke Will I? on 1.5x. Dream a Dream, Days Go By, just some easier 1/8th songs. Once you can read those, and you understand crossovers (turning sideways, like right down left down right) try an 8 footer, like Paranoia KCET (It says 9, but its really a beat-driven song) unless you don't think you have the stamina for a fast onthebeat song.

What I do is play on 1.5 speed if the arrows are too scrunched together. That way you can see if there are gallops or other step combos being disguised by the amount of arrows in little space. Sometimes I find that I thought I was supposed to be alternating single steps, when in reality, I was supposed to alternate jumping on two keys (a few times in a row). Also, pay attention to the beat of the music, including background beats. Sometimes in heavy mode they start making the steps go to a background beat.

Solo is also good for that, as it holds the arrows a constant color, so you can see color differences better.

Well really, it's already been said, but put on some speed mods and Solo to help you recognize different rhythms. My biggest tip for survival on Heavy mode is to play 5-10 songs that make you feel like you're going to collapse a night. Eventually, you'll be passing them, with a lot of breath in your lungs remaining.

end of the century is a horrible song to start on heavy....if you get ddr extreme, you should try b4u, kick the can, or only you on heavy. only you is a great song to learn gallops and kick the can is just an all around easy heavy song to get you used to reading the 16th note arrows while keeping the beat.

Kick the Can is a great song to learn on Heavy, but they're 1/8th notes, not 1/16th notes.

Oh, it happens. The hard thing is trying to determine what count of a note the step is in Bag.

I follow the melody because it's easy enough to remember, and if I forget like 3 steps and their placements I just read to the best of my ability.

i'm having a HARD time going fully over to heavy mode (again)1 as well... its not that i can't read the arrows, its that i can't move my feet fast enough. it is mostly times where there is an 1/8th beat right before or after a jump, 1/8th beats in a row on the same arrow, or just on REALLY fast songs.
I know its just going to be a while till i lose some of this weight and i can actually move fast enough... but hey, i think i'm rather good at ddr for a 350 lb dude
1: i was kinda on heavy mode before, i could pass a few of heavy songs, but then i dont know what happened, i just couldn't pass any of them one day.

I have only been playing a few weeks, and wanted to comiserate... On some of the workout modes they will throw me a heavy song (WHY??) and I end up thinking I get it, and then find out I am reading the arrows from left to right instead of top to bottom....which TOTALLY screws everything up!! oops.

sounds like she was trying to read the arrows like you would a book.. heh, sounds... interesting....
edit:
oh yeah, for the workout mode, if you have it set to program so its like a nonstop course, program 1 is mostly light (some beginner and some standard thrown in), program 2 is mostly standard (light and SOME heavy thrown in) and program 3 is mostly heavy )with standard and challenge in)... i have just been switching between order 1 and order 2 (20 random light songs for 1 and 20 random standard songs for 2)
i'm not sure how they figure out what songs to put in the 'players best' things... they seem to be some of my WORST songs...
