Hi, my friends told me about stepmania and I really got into it, but I want to play with an actual pad and not a keyboard. I want to play on ps2 since it's the only console (excluding pc) that I have. I was wondering which game and mat would be the best to start with. I'm not too good with a keyboard so i'll probably be playing beginner/light most of the time. I would really appreciate your opinions.

The only version of DDR that you can find quite easily right now is DDR Extreme. It's the one I have, and I like it a lot. As far as mat's go, just get the cheapest one you can find, MadCatz has one out for $30 Canadian, but its not too reliable. Make sure you keep the receipt for the warantee xD

DDR Extreme or MAX2 are the consensus favorites for beginners. As far as pads go, pretty much all soft mats are the same, and you'll probably want to start there until you know just how into the game you are, before spending the $$$ on a foam mat or metal pad. If you're going PS2 only, you may want to eventually lok at the ignition style pads from buynshop.com or levelsix.com, they're a good bit cheaper than the RedOctane pads, but lack the cross platform functionality of the Ignition 3. Of course, if money is no object, and you're willing to invest quite a bit, the cobalt flux is the granddaddy of home mats (short of buying your own machine).

i agree....flux pad is the way to go. the ignition pad is great to bring to a friends house instead of using their plastic pads, but as far as heavy play, go with a flux.

I have to disagree with recommendations of a Cobalt Flux as a starting pad. Asking someone to invest $300+ as a way to inroduce them to the game is not reasonable, IMO. I'm even leery of suggesting an ignition at $100 as an intro pad. If you know you're going to be playing the game for years, and you have the space and means to store it, then by all means, go flux. But if you have any inkling that you may only play for a year or so, even burning out a $20 soft mat every month will cost you less in a year than a flux will. And that's not even reasonable as the soft mat mods in every case I've read has extended their lifespan to a minimum of 6 months. The Cobalt Flux is a luxury item, suggesting it to a new player is sort of like recommending a 60" flat-screen LCD to a new player. Does it enhance your gaming experience? Absolutely. Is it necessary? No way.

I wasn't suggesting a flux...I was just stating that the flux pad is great, but not for a new player, unless you have 300 bucks to spare...and want somewhat of an arcade experiance at home.

honestly just starting out i bought a gamestop pad, the fabric top/nonslip type. i had it for 3 years and played mostly on standard with it. i gave it away to a friend this past april with my ps1 and konamix, and she's having no problems with it. if you take care of your soft pads, they will last okay unless you are playing heavy on them. the ignition pad is a good upgrade from a regular softpad, but i am extremely happy with the flux pad. i play more and more on it every night than any of the other pads i had.

Yeah the generic soft pads are designed for beginners, and DO NOT last long if you play heavy songs. I crapped out a pad in less than a week playing nothing but heavy songs...thats when I decided to get the flux.

They can last a while if you take good care of them. I hit the point of being able to pass every 9 footer on a softpad with at least a B, then it lasted a few more months up until I could pass them all with A's. You just have to be careful how you fold them, or don't fold them at all.
