PS2 Player 1 won't work DDR Extreme

I just got a pad and DDR Extreme for my PS2. I can get the pad to work in the P2 slot but not the P1 slot and that's where all the lessons and training our. It won't let me use them.

Also, no problems with other controllers in the PS1 slot.

Any ideas?

Does the pad work with other games? (not necessarily DDR games, but you should be able to tell if it's registering in other games, or even the PS2 menus)

Does the pad work on another PS2? (Do you have a friend who could try it on theirs?)

Do other pads work in the P1 side on your PS2?
