Hello, I am new to the site and I have a problem. I would like to use DDR to lose weight and more importantly get into shape. I bought myself an at home DDR pad because I really suck at the game at I was not doing it in public. I have tried playing the game but I cant even do the light mode. I think I just don't have the coordination...Can somebody help me get on the right track so I can get better?!

practice, practice, practice! just keep at it - everyone and i mean EVERYONE sucks at it at first! Quoted for truth. Also, play through lesson mode at least once. It really helps, even if it feels like it doesn't. Remember that you're learning about 5 new skills at once. Finding the beat, reading the arrows, where the arrows are, balancing, transitioning between the arrows, etc. It's a lot to throw at your mind at once. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.

Keep at the practice/tutorial/learning modes until you get the timing right. Then find some nice slow songs with 1 foot. Eventually they'll get too easy and you'll want to move on to 2-footers, 3-footers, and so on, until you're in Standard/Trick!
Good luck! <3 Don't expect a whole lot of calories burnt right away, but at least you're up and going! ;D Go, go go!

Everyone sucks at first. I'm still on standard mode. And once you think you've got it, you play one day, and realize you're back to sucking. But you always get better the next time. Believe me, I was HORRIBLE when I started. My boyfriend introduced me to it, so I'd get pissed that he'd be on heavy mode while I struggled with light. You'll get it!

Yeah, it CAN take awhile to get decent. Heck, I've played for over a year now and I'm just starting to be able to beat standards and a few heavys...nevermind geting AA or AAA.
However, just because I'm sucktastic at DDR doesn't mean I don't have fun or get a good workout. Both are acomplished regardless of how well I do score wise. It's hopping around like a cracked out zebra that does the trick for me

I played beginner mode for 9 months and then I went to light and I am now barley on standard, and I have been playing for a year. You can do it!

Yes, practice is the best way. Also, there is one thing you can do with your feet. Refrain from moving your feet back in the middle after each step. Keep your foot on the arrow. I'm not sure if you do this or not, but if you do, then try to not do it.

play through the game mode not free play you can gain tons of experience doing that. keep on playing i think if you keep the negative mindset you are more likely to quit or not want to play. i think the fear of sucking keeps people from playing

When I frist started, I couldn't even do the easiest of StepMania songs, but after a while, I started figuring it out. Most of the game is about processing the arrows and making your body move... Of course. Now, I have trouble making my body keep up with my mind. I might be pushing my body too hard, but until I run into trouble, I'm going to keep at it. I just passed Robotix on Hard on ITG2, but it took me about twenty tries. Idk why the song was so hard. Awkward steps, I guess. Keep at it, and don't let failure get you down. Take challenges by the horns and give 'em hell. If you want, try playing StepMania on your PC, until you can get with the groove. Then put your feet in the game.

One thing I found that really helped starting out was that in conjunction with playing the actual game, I would play stepmania on my keyboard. this helped me learn the arrow patterns/finding a beat etc. So that when I actually played the game I could focus on my foot movement.
