It is indeed a kilo-calorie. I would not take the workout mode's burned calories litarally, though. The workout mode assumes that you are playing songs in the way that your average new player would play them: standing in the middle of the pad, expending HUGE amounts of energy to hit each pad, hitting them far harder then necessary, raising their feet very high and coming down hard. If you play a couple 9 foot songs the calorie marker will shoot right up to a good 30 or 40 thousand calories. Seeing as a cholocate bar is only a few hundred calories.... that's an awful lot of chocolate bars...

I think that the calories burned also is counted by how many steps you do, miss or hit.

I think that the calories burned also is counted by how many steps you do, miss or hit. Yeah, it does. Unless, you miss and hit the floor and not the dance pad itself. ;D But yeah, calories burn is counted by whatever steps you make, even if you miss the arrows because you are still at least attempting to hit the arrows.

Thanks Furic, now that's what I call an inspiration / motivation, to get up and dance dance dance.
I really didn't know for sure if it still kept counting even if I tapped the wrong pad.

have to say...since i have been playing.. i dont really use that calorie thingie.. it is way off i think... i just play for 30 -45 min ...and the average calorie burn for that amount of activity is 500.... so... i say that i burn about 500 calories... watch your heart rate too!! you never want that going too high...otherwise you are not buring fat.. you are burning muscle!! there is a write up on the main site under getting started ...check it out

At first I wondered what kCal was too. I figured it was kilo-calories. As I DDR'd, it didn't seem very accurate to me. Getting thousands of calories worked off didn't seem right. I don't really know how accurate the meter is. All I can say is I don't see kCal anymore. I just see Cal. I forgot about the k-part a long time ago and just figured they really meant Calorie. So that's how I've taken the meter. That's how I've measured my calories lost.

The reason for this discrepancy is that what we (at least in America) think of as calories are, in fact, kilocalories. Take a look at this site from the USDA where you can look up nutrition information on various foods; all the foods listed there have their energy stated in "kcal": www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/As far as the accuracy of the calorie counter in workout mode, given that the calculator in the game doesn't take into account heart rate, or metabolic rate, or other factors that can affect calorie burn (such as smoking), I don't think it's accurate to say that because your accumulated calories burned is at 3,500 on your game that you've necessarily lost one pound. However, I do think the in-game counter is accurate in terms of gauging the intensity level of songs in proportion to each other, so a song that burns about 10 calories does probably burn twice as much calories as a song that burns only 5 calories. For people who don't want to or can't handle high-intensity songs, this is probably a good way to calculate how many low-intensity songs you need to do to match one high-intensity song.

Yes, I will confirm that what you consider a calorie is the same as a kcal, or kilo-calorie, so if the game says you have burned 8 kcal, it's the same as 8 calories. Yeah, I don't think it's entirely accurate. I play mostly 6 - 8 footers (have just started passing catas) & for 15 minutes of play (10 songs), it said I burned 200 calories & the equivalent of jogging 2 miles. I probably took as many steps as a person who jogged 2 miles, but without nearly as much effort.

Well... I don't know but when I play 10 miniutes of DDR I feel like I ran 2 miles. I mean... I get much more tired playing 10 miniutes of DDR then 2 miles. Does that make any sence at all? lol

Well, of course you're probably playing at a high level, am I right? Jogging isn't a demanding thing to do, but more repeatitive. DDR has various step counts and therefore different various speeds within a song, usually. And if you play a faster song, at say 200bmp as opposed to 150bmp, you're going to get more worked up than the 150bmp. Of course, the amount at which a person can exercise is a variable as well. Not everyone is in as good of shape as someone else.
