I got extreme a week ago, but I'm going back to MAX2. My thoughts:
- Did they actually play test workout mode? It makes no sense. It's like they got feedback about wanting better tracking for workout mode, so the programmers went back into their dark corners and coded up something without even getting people who care to test it and see if it was what people wanted. "Ok, people really like workout mode. Let's just get rid of it completely." Brilliant. Honestly, I would have been happy with scoring in workout mode. Give me my "AAA" and I'll be happy!
- I don't care for the songs much. I'm not a huge fan of the songs on MAX2 either, but extreme is a step backwards. There are some good ones, so I can't complain too much. But I was hoping for more.
- The song selection screen has the nice feature of being able to see your ranks for a song at all levels, and the difficulty level at each level. That's nice. I prefer the MAX2 screen still, but that's more because I am used to it.
- The songs seem much easier. Standard mode on extreme is much easier than standard on max2. I could get A's on many standard songs the first time through. On MAX2, I only have a couple A/AA songs on standard. I know the scoring is different, but I also know how easy/hard the songs are.
- Many of the extreme songs are rhyhmically weird. Sometimes the steps don't seem to be related to the beat in the music at all. On many of the songs I can do them better if I turn the volume down and just follow the beat in my head. While I like some challenges, it's just ridiculous at times. Why even have the songs at all if the steps aren't even remotely related?
- Why do we have to choose a dancer every time? I like in max2 how you can set your preferences once and use them every game. It takes WAY to long to start a game. And with the loss of workout mode, it's even more noticable.
I'm sure I'll pop in extreme every now and then for some variety. But, it's going to be mostly max2 for me.
