My dad told me of a technique he used to help him quit smoking, and I thought I would share it here. Do you have something you want to quit? Read on.
The idea is fairly simple. You make a calendar and mark off the days that you've 'quit' your obstacle. First, you have to go out and buy a piece of bristol board. Then you have to make the calendar yourself for the month (I divided mine into four months) You have to measure each line, make a good copy of it, mark all the dates, etc. Fancy it up with glitter or pictures of girls in bikinis or whatever. It's yours, personalize it as much as you want.
Now, grab a string and a marker, and tape the one end of the string to the board and the other to your marker. I stapled mine so it didn't fall. This is your 'accomplishment' marker, you get to use it to cross your days off.
Put the calendar up beside your bed, and every night before you go to sleep mark off the day if you've gone without giving in to your weakness.
Here's the catch; if you cheat, not only do you have the feeling of failure, but you also have to go out and buy more bristol board, more glitter, more pictures of girls in bikinis, and make a whole new calendar. Even if you only cheat "a little bit", you have to tear down your old calendar and make a new one. Also, you don't have to start immediately; circle a day a few days or even weeks from today's date and make that your "start date".
Again, the idea is pretty simple, but effective. Wanting to put that X on the square of your calendar each night is just enough to reconsider whatever it is you're trying to quit. I've implimented mine to quit biting my nails, and it's been a week and I'm still going strong.
Hopefully this was useful to someone
