The title says it all, really. Is anyone else here an overweight smoker trying to kill the exess by DDRing? No anti-smoking evangelesits please, I'm in the process of cutting back and slowly quitting. I've done it cold turkey, and I eventually go back....I'm just curious to see how this smoking/fattness affects others in their weight loss challenges/goals etc....

Not to be too cliche, but find a hobby, whether it be DDR or something else that doesnt create stress and allows you to calm down your cravings. My dad quit chain smoking (still smokes occasionally, maybe a cigarette or 2 every other night), basically he started doing at home projects and low stress things (watching hunting shows....). Its not good to quit cold turkey, like you said, its best to slowly get rid of the habit. I think it takes what? 14 days to break a habit?

Well... I use to smoke a lot of weed, but I don't really anymore but recently I have been smoking a lot of Black and Milds and the such, but I'm trying to stop the habit... (I don't like the word quit.)

My real trouble is when I am playing a difficult song and I push myself until the end and then I can't breathe. I colapse and gasp. The guy who runs the arcade here every once in a while will comment to me...you know you could step it up if you quit smoking. *tsk* they know me too well.

I'm a smoker.. I'm going to quit. One day. I've been blessed with an enormous lung capacity though so while I've been smoking for 2 years, I can run accross a football field and not lose my breath (that's probably exhagerrating, but the same idea)

See- it's the stress that gets me going on smoking in the first place (smoking a lot, that is...when I'm not freaking out I'm usually about 4-6 cigarettes at the very MOST), but then I'm usually able to ramp down again because I'm just not freaking out anymore. I've been noticing that it's the habitual part of it all- when I drive I like having something in my hands, after a good meal the first thing that pops into my head is- smoke? I'm going to look into straws for the car habit, a friend of mine went from chain smoking in his car to chewing on straws. It may not be very appealing, but neither is smoking, and at least straws won't give you cancer...:-)

Sounds like my mom works at your arcade! She was in my apartment once, and I decided to show her my rad movies on my then brand new DDR pad, and I got out of breath. She got all snooty "If you quit smoking you wouldn't be gasping like that!" Lucky me I can retaliate with "Yeah, whateva you smoked for like 35 years!!!" hehehe. Someday, we'll quite though. One of these days.

I can't run long distances for crap. Usually walking up a flight or two at school kills me. Luckily I can go through a standard level of workout mode DDR though and burn off some calories without croaking....I dunno what it is? DDR is magical. :-)

you gain stamina though... I remember when healing vision (standard) made me out of breath... and then when I was able to pass orion.78 on standard and nearly passed out... then holic on heavy... then healing vision angellic mix on standard... little steps... but my lungs are getting stronger. Now it's those 9-10 foot songs that really kill me... 99% of the time I will fail out then pass out... but everytime I actually pass one I get this incredible rush and feel as if I have defeated something really big. really important. of course... I can't breathe for the next five min. lol. but I'm hoping that too will change.

Yes, it's always good to have a definitive reason to stop, besides it could kill you.
I'm stopping because running cross country while being a smoker wouldn't be the easiest thing...

The phrase I made up for my mom is this: "So, let me get this straight. You are paying to kill yourself?"
