It's pricey, and requires access to either a welder or someone who can weld to build, but it's the best looking homepad I've seen. There's also some good tidbits in there for sensor design. Check it out: inventgeek.com/Projects/dancepad1/overview.aspx

Looks so spiffy! LOVING the light beams *stares in open-mouthed fascination* I'm sure it's a hundred times better than my crappy-ghost-stepping-Madcatz..
It's really too bad I'm not handy with a hammer / screwdriver / blowtorch, or I'd print their instructions and try to make one of my own. However, knowing my clutzy ways, I'd probably: A) Drop the blowtorch and set fire to my house B) Drop the steel bars on my foot and break all my toes C) Blind myself with the light beams D) Have a spring get stuck in my eye (actually happened to a cousin once, poor guy...)
All in all, I'll leave the dance-platform-building to the professionals and buy a Flux instead.

I don't get how that is supposed to work.

I don't get how that is supposed to work. Yeah, it's not the clearest howto I've ever seen. Basically, the steel frame acts as ground for the circuit (ground, also called common, is shared among all sensors in a DDR mat or game controller [except for this one Dreamcast controller I found, but it was the exception, not the rule]). The arrows all had small connectors along the rails (via the foil tape) the would complete the circuit when the arrow was stepped on (the foil tape was connected to a wire lead that went back to the control board). They're using extremely thick acrylic (looks to be about 1/2") for the panels, which allows them to suspend them over the empty frame (except for the 1" along the edges) and let the lights shine through. The thing that confounds me is that they have no "cap" on the panels, so it would seem that "extreme play motions" might cause a panel to jump up out of the frame. 1/2" acrylic has quite a flex to it. The other problem I see is that they shine/buff the steel frame to remove corrosion, but take no steps to prevent further corrosion, but I could've missed something in the instructions.

^^^^^ ahahahaha...you sound like me. *high fives fellow clutz* Woohoo! Another clutz! How we manage to DDR without causing bodily harm to ourselves is quite the mystery. Although I have to admit I regularly trip over my puppy when I dance to "Breakdown". For some inexplicable reason, she gets drawn to the tv like a magnet when that song plays, completely oblivious to the crazy girl on the dance mat. It's a miracle I haven't broken a leg yet (mine or hers).

We are go on these pads, we even have a guy in our church who is going to weld the frames together for us. We are gonna have two of these babies. The pricing on them actually isn't too bad either. I think I priced them around $225 a piece. which really isn't too bad. That is for all the materials. I will post pics as soon as I can.

These pads look like a horrible design for anyone over 100lbs. How are you not going to put your foot right through that thing?

These pads look like a horrible design for anyone over 100lbs. How are you not going to put your foot right through that thing? 1) It's Acrylic, which is *much* harder than Plexi. Plexi has a give to it that Acrylic doesn't have. Normally this would be bad for a DDR mat, as less flex means easier breakage, but that brings us to... 2) It's thick as *expletive*. See here. They're using Acrylic that looks to be close to 1/2" thick. 1/2" Acrylic in an 11"x11" dimension isn't going to break for anyone under probably 500lbs.

I have jumped on this plexi and the stuff is tough, and I am ove 100 pounds. The ones we bought suck major they are almost completly beat, and we are down to one, but soon enough we will have the news ones up and running. They look very cool and not chintzy at all, you want to spend 250 bucks on pad, this is a pad to spend it on, making it isn't too difficult, you might have to spend a little more if you don't know any one who welds but it's very much worth it. Also if you want to use something hard than plexi but still transparent, you can use polycarbonate, but its over half as much as acrylic 1/2 inch.

Okay so we are right in the middle of wiring and we are figuring out our own better way of doing it. YIKES!! their directions are a bit cloudy leaving you to guess some things.

Feel free to ask me some questions, I've figured out the assembly for the most part.

Well instead of fishing the wire through, because thier vaccume cleaner and string trick didn't work, we are going to do the wire on the outside and with the holes we drilled that the wires are supposed to come out of we are goign to slip zip ties through them and then bundle the wires underneath the four fram parts, and the lights are a totally seprate entity, they apparantely drilled holes into the sides and they removed part of the casing on the lights and fished them through the fram. My brother has it half way done, he wired the old control to the main terminal now we need to wire the new wires to the the new sensors and connect them. I hope that made sense. So my brother I think is still trying to figure it out so if he has any questions I will send him here to ask on my account. Thanks Abrannan ^_^

I'm pretty clutzy during the normal day, but I can crossever and do other complicated steps without messing up while playing DDR although I have fallen over playing before...
