its not necessarily that they are harder...some of the challenge songs have certain styles in them, if played correctly are harder than just playing without turning your body or crossing over.

Well, with Tsugaru it is two different songs (applemix is an entirely different mix).
Oh, and English lesson for the day, ryanddrfreak:

yeah and there are those songs...I was referring to the songs that have the challenge setting above heavy (A, Kukumei, etc.). Although they seem harder, in order to play them the "correct" way, or the same style you would play with the original heavy setting, you have to perform sometimes difficult series of steps. Although for the "cheaters" that dont cross over it wont be as hard.

so how long did it take you or are you still wandering?its shorter and less to type!(i.e. lol=laghf out loud, brb=be right back)learn it! This ain't AOL chat, friend. Speed doesn't matter here. What does matter is getting your point across in a manner that others can read and understand. We've had this discussion before. I'm a firm believer that you do what you practice. If you use only sloppy grammar and spelling, you'll learn only sloppy spelling, and you'll continue to use sloppy writing. Just as with weight loss, you have to change your daily habits in order to effect lasting change.

Laghfing out loud myself! Abveously! *falls out of her chair laughing at her own stupidity* OK, sorry. I couldn't resist. Speed and efficiency are not always equal to superior, friends. Sometimes it's better to take your time and be clear about what you are trying to say. I know all you l33t!5t5 have all the shortcuts down, but abrannan's right . . . practicing something poorly only makes you mediocre. It's like someone practicing to play DDR by always trying to return to the center . . . you might be amazingly good at anything below 6 feet, but you'll never get any better than that. Not being able to express yourself clearly isn't the best sacrafice to make for expediency. Haste makes waste, and sometimes misunderstanding . . . On a more serious note . . . I can only hope that I'll be as skilled as ryanddrfreak one day on the DDR mat. I stand in awe of those of you who play all the time on heavy and challenge . . . my hat's off to you! UJKitten

Well... it's not really hard... it's just acquiring the skill to read the notes, which may come faster than you think. Oh, and the ability to keep up with the songs too... ;D

I was always under the impression that perhaps some challenge steps were easier because they were for the oni courses, where you can only miss 4 steps?

Although you are using your fingers, you are working out your brain =P

I just used my feet to learn Heavy....
But then later I got Stepmania so I guess that helped me read the notes...

While my roommate used the controller to unlock songs, I've never used the controller while playing DDR. I'm starting to close the gap between Standard and Heavy . . . using only my feet. However . . . I've said it before, and I'll say it again . . . my foot-eye coodination has always been better than my hand-eye coordination!

I used my controller to learn to read the arrows, and I think Im progressing at a fair rate. Kudos to ujk for doing it the old fashioned way; I know I don't have the patience When I get a new game, I need to master it, and master it quick.

LOL . . . I only did it the "old fashioned way" because it would be useless for me to try and learn it with a controller . . . my hand-eye coordinations stinks!

I'm like the only one who never used the controller?
I use the controller to make edit steps... that's it.
Oh, and figuring out rhythms to challenging songs such as I Feel... (the original mix, T.O.Y. is rather straightforward) is one of the fun things of DDR.

It doesn't seem like anyone has given a thourough answer to this, so I'll help: Although Challenge is listed in line after Light, Standard, and Heavy, it does not imply the steps are harder. "Challenge" is merely the designation for any song that has different steps for the Oni course. They can be more difficult (Colors) or much easier (Matsuri Japan). Typically they are more difficult because, contrary to an earlier post, Oni courses are not all designed to be easy. If you think they are, try Legend Road 1 or 2.

He wasn't talking about Oni courses, just songs.
Also, Matsuri Japan has no Oni mode.
