This probably goes without saying, but never, EVER play DDR in high heel boots.
They have a DDR machine at our theatre, which I've played a few times. The problem is I usually wear these high heel boot things whenever I go out, and I tried playing DDR in them once... not a good idea. I thought my ankles were going to crap out on me. Now I just take my shoes off if I play ;D

plus high heals will crack the glass Nah don't worry, they're not traditional heels, as in there's no point on the end... they look kinda like this.

I like those boots.. Cute .... I have at various times played in chunky shoes, and for me, well I haven't seen it as a problem because I usually run around NYC in high heels.. On that note. Doing anything strenuous in heels ( Like DDR) can cause damage. It may not show signs now, but believe me, when you hit in your late 20s and early 30s, all those unnecessary pounding without the proper shoes can leave you cursing at the highest mountain.. What will be the point losing weight if you can't walk up a flight of stairs without holding your knee.. However, I tried the Ballet slipper and they work great...

I can try the ballet slipper thing for you if you want . . . I have a pair laying around gathering dust since I graduated. I mostly danced modern in college so I'm used to dancing barefoot but I took a few ballet classes and the slippers do offer some support but *no* padding. Also, the leather on the bottom of the slipper is intended to provide grip on a rubber mat (called a "marley") so the dancer doesn't fall on her a** in the middle of a turn. This grip action might be kind of a problem on the soft pads. But I will test the theory if anyone is curious. UJKitten just wear socks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eeeehh... I always hated those slip on shoes. They were popular in the 80's... one of the many things I wish would have just stayed dead. lol. Besides...I could just see someone's foot getting sweaty and the shoe go flying off their foot!! sort of like the DDR/got served episode of south park where butters kills all of those people because of his shoe flying off.

just wear socks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, thanks. Some of us prefer to be barefoot. I like it better because I'm used to dancing without anything on my feet. It makes the muscles in your feet stronger. Also, my dance teachers used to have conniption fits if we wore anything on our feet. I'll just stick to what I know. xstatic - I loved that episode of south park! ESPECIALLY THE DANCING DUCK!! LOLOLOL And the song that plays when Butters is dancing at the nationals! *sings* I've got something in my front pocket . . . OK, sorry . . . I got a little excited. I tried the ballet slippers and they offered some support. The grip from the leather on the bottom of them was no problem . . . so if anyone was wondering about them, I would recommend them if you want support but don't mind no padding. If you are going to go buy a pair I *strongly* recommend going to your local dance store and getting fitted for them. The sizes are not like shoe sizes, and too-tight ballet slippers are akin to torture devices used by the Spanish Inquisition. You'll want a pair that hug your feet (ie, no loose space) but a relaxed hug . . . form fitted but not constricting. You should be able to spread your toes out relatively well inside of them. Also, they take about a week of wearing around the house to break in. Leather stretches better than other fibers, but costs more. You can usually get them in black, white, or what they call "theatrical pink." UJKitten

While just about anyone else I know prefers playing with socks, I just dont feel as balanced with them on for some reason. I guess I just prefer a slightly textured grip. (I use a metal pad) However, in cases where shoes are better off being used (wouldn't recommend going barefooted in an arcade ) I just use my comfy Vans. ^.^

those comfy vans you speak of... DDR in the arcade ruined mine. both shoes have massive air bubbles inside the soles and you can always hear me comming because I now squeak when I walk. but anyways, I love playing bare footed... the few times I wore socks I thought I was going to fly off the dance pad. UrbanJK - did you say that you go barefoot on a home version metal pad? I assumed that would hurt like hell.

No no no no no. I have only crappy soft pads at this point in time . . . like most people just starting out. If I were going to play on an ingition style pad, I would probably still go barefoot. If I were to play on a metal pad . . . I can't say. Shoes would be nice, but I'm used to playing barefoot. I've never had the pleasure of playing on a metal pad.
I've worn socks maybe once or twice, but I can "feel" the ground better with bare feet.

I used a softpad in bare feet until the pad didn't function anymore. I just about killed my feet with blisters. The blisters actually got blisters too!! My boyfriend saw how tore up my feet were and gave me $200 to go buy a metal pad from Frys. That was the greatest day of my life. I tried every kind of shoe because after using a softpad, I felt like I couldn't tell where the buttons were. I bought some cheap shoes that helped me feel the buttons. They worked good but gave me aches in my arches. Finally, I decided to try one of the first pairs I had tried to begin with, my New Balance 765 running shoes. I found that now that I had experience with the metal pad, I could wear any type of tennis shoes and still feel the arrows. These running shoes are the best shoes I've ever owned in my life and they work great for DDR. They cost about $100 and I would highly recommend them. Now my feet never hurt.

I wear Shox or Basketball shoes and have never had a problem. Of course I have to buy special soles due to my flat-footedness.
