I do 99% of my DDR ing at home...no bars or anything, since it's just a soft pad and a couch in the tv room there.
When I go to the arcade there are these bars...I always kinda assumed they were for safety, like if a mad dancer were to fall or something, they could grab the bar, and not maim any innocent bystanders.
I've seen a few people do tricks on them, and recently heard someone say in a post that they *need* the bar to complete a particular song. Is that true? Would having a bar or similar support aid me in some situations, what kind?
I thank you all in advance for your DDR bar expertise.

Using the bar takes about 75% of the weight off your feet, allowing you to play faster with less stress.
People call it cheating, but whatever, they can call foul all they want when I beat them in a tournament because they didn't use it.
(BTW, I use the bar about half the time, but none of my heavy AAAs happened while I was using it for some reason)

I don't feel comfortable holding the bar... I actually do better without it o.O... I feel uncomfortable (specially crossovers) where I would stay in one position and my legs would move all around... So uncomfortable...
So Deep without bar= AA
With bar = .... FAIL!!.....
Yeah.... I'm weird ^_^

I only play at home, so the bar issue is moot, but it also plays against my using DDR as an exercise tool. I want the game to challenge my footwork and stamina. I've sen folks play it in the arcade using the bar, but it seems to ruin what's fun about the game to me.

i never thought anybody would think of it like that. LOL. but i do use the bar on the very hard songs in my opinion. It helps me and I would use it if i have the chance but most of the time, i dont use the bar, unless i'm trying to freestyle or sumtin

Any who.. sometimes when I get mad at the person next to me. I have this urge to take the bar and smack them right across the face.. Maybe it would come in handy

Maria: S1 override codes. My DDR-themed ones are better, in my opinion (check out the community 'FoxValleyBemani' for an example). Just find me on AIM and I can send you a text file with the overrides and color schemes. BTW, just an example of how bar use can give you the edge . . . TO THE EXTREEEEEEEEEME!!!!!!!111oneonemilkandcookies

Tha bar can help you when you're tired. That's when I use it. But it's true that when leaning on the bar, you can move your feet a lot faster for the max and paranoia songs. ;D

But then again the more you use the bar the more you become dependent upon it... It's like a drug lol
