As far as which pad to get, it really depends on how advanced you are in the game. I started out on some cheap soft pads, which were fine when you can only do 3-4 foot songs anways. Eventually I upgraded to the ignition type pads (not real ignitions, as much as that would have been nice, some of us just aren't capable of buying the top of the line stuff) and those worked for a while, then I finally built my own pad, which was a faily enjoyable endevour, and now I got two metal pads for X-Mas from my parents. (Then again I need them now, playing like 8-9 footers, working on the 10s)
Well there is my basckstory as far as pads go, I would just recommend starting off with some cheap $20 softpads from like GameStop and then wear those out, and decide then where your skill is and how nice of pads you need. I Would reccomend going to the Home Depot and picking up a piece of 4x8 pegboard or plywood for like $10 and then ducktaping your softpads down to those. They work ALOT better when they are attached to something like that.
Anyways, good luck everyone...

I'm sorta new at DDR (been doing it for a month or so). Currently, I can A or AA light mode. I see people saying how when they got to heavy mode the pounds just shed off. Does this mean that light mode won't work...even if I were to do it for an hour or more 5-7 times a week? Also, can someone give me some tips on getting over to standard? Light mode is too easy right now. And, standard is too hard. Any tips to get me to the next level?

I think the biggest step in making a transition from light to standard difficulty is getting those half steps down. I could be wrong because I was making the same transition years ago on 3rd - 4th mix but I'm sure this can't hurt either. Some good songs to start off on are Brilliant2U and Dream A Dream. Those are fairly easy half step songs and should get you prepared for whatever may be sent your way. Good Luck! ;D

Hey SignalError,
I kind of agree with Toadie but also have some opinions of my own about a dance pad. Definitely start with a cheap pad! These break within about 4-5 months but at least you can find out if you want to spend more money on this game and it'll definitely help you get your feet wet ( Not as in sweaty...although that might happen too...which is kinda gross...so ya...i digress.... ). After your either fed up with your unresponsive dance pad or it just plain breaks, you make one of two choices.
1. I like this game alot and I want to enhance my playing experience 2. This game is alright but I probably won't play that often
If you chose 1, get the best soft pad you can afford. I recommend the Red Octane Ignition Pads 2.0. You might want to wait for a sale on them i think i picked up 2 for 150 bucks from their website. These will GREATLY enhance your playing experience and they last a looong time. I've had mine for about 2 years now and they're still kickin it. If you ever get hardcore enough and have sufficient funds get urself a pair of red octance metal pads or cobalt fluxes. but that'll easily cost u over 400 dollars for 2... But this is as close to the arcade as you'll get without buying a machine ( which u can also do if you really want to...heh )
If you chose 2 I recommend just get urself another pair of cheap soft pads till they break. Dance pads become a big investment and if you're just a casual player no need to plunk down serious cash.
In case you're interested... I began with a cheap topway 3rd party dance pad which I modded the crap out of until it just went kuput. I think i spent around 50 bucks including the price of the pad total. I went on to buy 2 official konami dance pads which costed 50 each for a total of 100 which I ended up having to mod as well since soft pads are just not very versatile to different floor surfaces. I went on to get my Red Octane Ignition Pads for a buy one get one half off deal for 150 and NEVER had to spend anymore money on it. It works wonderfully on many surfaces and you can't really consider it a soft pad. It's more like a spoungey pad? heh One day I may get metal pads but I find it hard to find time to play ddr frequently nowadays cuz I'm getting old V_V But that's my story, so I hope that helps!

well Tanya's story got me to try DDR out and so far it is working well. I weighed 332lbs. last summer and had got down to 290lbs. by this past Christmas. I have been having a hard time losing weight since then. I picked up ddr after seeing Tanya on the MTV Games special and am now down to 277lbs. I haven't been on the Atkins diet, but just low carbing and eating healthy. Have lots of subway salads, lots of water and fruits and veggies. Been playing DDR a little more every night so far. Have a couple 45 minute sessions a night now with a small break in between.

I would seriously steer clear of Subway salads. I worked there for 2 years and I know too much. You guys will have to just take my word on this one. Anyways, there's nothing spectacular about them... We just take the lettuce we normally put on a sub stick them in a black plastic container and u get the same veggies u usually get on a sub anyway. Not to mention is more expensive than get a 6-inch veggie.... I bet you're better off finding some local sub restaurant that might serve salad as well. BEWARE OF THE CORPORATE NAZIS! And if anyone is interested...I'm thinking of ebaying my subway work shirts If anyone is interested let me know and I'll put it up. lol

So you wanna know the truth eh...Tanya? Well I guess it's time to enlighten the world ;D First I'd like to say gomen-neh sai to all those that won't appreciate what they hear. In fact... SUBWAY SPOILER!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE EATEN THEIR FOOD!Okay let's see...first of all I would like to say I did not partake in the actions I'm about to describe, I was just making ends meet and actually did things right. It's just the high school kids that are lazy and want to impress...so let's begin FRESHLY CHOPPED VEGETABLES! Do you know how they get chopped? Well there's a gigantic knife in the back used to slice the vegetables obviously...but people like to play "Subway Baseball" and toss onions and tomatoes and what not into the air and slice it in half on the fly. Of course when they're sliced they fall flat on the NASTY floor and subway has NASTY floors because it IS a busy fast food chain and there's alot of traffic going on in the back. We also slice vegetables with a slicer and a garbage can right underneath it to catch the undesirable parts. It's not uncommon to have them fall in there, so what do we do? OVERBEARING EVIL MANAGER: "We have to keep food costs down so save what you can" Translation: Take it out and continue slicing, if u wanna rinse it that's okay...if you don't want to, that's okay. Oh did I mention we prepare all the "fresh" veggies about 2 weeks in advance and keep them in the fridge also known as walk-in. They tend to kinda get slimy so you're supposed to rub it around so it magically isn't slimy anymore. You're also supposed to rotate the veggies so people dont get stuck with disgustingly old vegetables...again people dont do this so when they eventually reach the bottom of the plastic bins, i dunno what's even growing there.... MMMM HOT SANDWICHES!!! I have to say we're pretty good in this department except for the meatballs. Usually a ton of meatballs are prepared at once and most of the time we never get to all of them. So what happens? A big hairy green mold grows on top so what's a "good" employee to do? Scrape it off and heat it up! Not to mention the meatballs in the bin are at LEAST 3 days old because whatever we dont finish in a day we fridge up and heat up in the microwave in the morning. That's all I have to say about that. There's more I'd like to say about the cookies, soups, breads, and just the staff in general...but I'm tired ^_^ I believe most of you got the general jist of things. If I feel up to it I'll write up a part II Happy Salad and Sandwich eating!!! On a side note, washing your hands is not enforced! Aura out

Subway ;D Great subs indeed. But i have the time to drive to subway when I get hungry so i have changed my diet at home. Im cutting back on empty carbs (white bread, rice, cake) and most if not all of sugar. I have already done a 180 when i comes to how i eat. Last year in High school I was drinking about 3-4 regular cokes a day. now im drinking diet. AuraWind - Thanks for the tips Im planning on getting a new pad this week.

I am planning on getting the Ignition v2 pads (not official RedOctane, these pads have 2cm foam insert not 1") I can purchase 2 for $50-$60 for both; my current pad came with Max2 bundle. It is good, but I am have been in standard mode, speed increased to 1.5+. It slides often and misses arrows often; it is time to buy a better pad. B) The pads I am looking to purchase are avaliable on Ebay.

Hey...I stumbled accross this site today and it intriged me. I am a 20 year old college student weighing around 220 lbs. I have been going back and forth between sizes 16 and 20 for the past 3 or 4 years. I have been looking desperately for anything that will help me (I haven't gone to diet pills or starving myself, don't worry . I would love to get one of these DDR pads, but I don't have a playstation or anything like that to play it on....is there another alternative that would do just about the same thing? I would love to get down to a size 14 or 12....i would love to be that slim some day....but I need some help in getting there! Thanks![glow=red,2,300]TEXT[/glow][glow=red,2,300]TEXT[/glow]

Sup yall, My name is Matt & I'm going to be on the "DDR Diet" until Senior Prom @ my high school (May-Juneish). I've always been a huge fan of DDR and the Bemani arcade series (and i've also alway's sucked at it.. practice makes perfect eh?), and recently I was able to purchase DDR Ultramix for Xbox. After playing for a couple of minutes with a racing wheel adapter and my friend's ps1 DDR pad (borrowed) I was hooked. I started playing DDR about a week and a half ago and I began my diet exactly 1 week ago today (1/29/04). Today I found a great website which will allow me to catalog my progress (www.fitday.com) and I feel very optimistic. I saw Tanya Jessen's story on MTV and it truly inspired me to give this diet a try. I also saw Jessica Mirch's webjournal and hope her the best of luck with her diet. OK.. sorry to go on and on, im just really stoked about this diet and about opening a newer, healthier chapter in my life.
- Chonis
P.S. If anyone is interested in checking my progress you can view my diet stats at (http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJournals.html?Owner=DDRfreak)

Also.. about teh subway.. At my school, the cafeteria workers and also the student's who work in the kitchen make regular turkey subs with their own meat (not subway meat) and their own bread (not subway bread) and the package it in subway wrappers and sell it for 3.50! I'm not sure whether that's legal or not.. but u can tell when u eat them that it's not subway.. they just taste bland and dry. NEways.. just a warning to all yall highschooler's as subway is being sold at more and more schools.

Hi! I'm 230 lbs, 6'1'' male, who started playing DDR more actively few months ago. I started out with buying first the mat which came with Jungle Book bundle and after got tired of it slipping the whole time, I just build by own pad with my dad. (works almost as good as arcade pad) Now I'm just wondering, what is this workout mode everyone is talking about (I'm only playing at the arcade and with Stepmania with mat)? Also, could you tell me what songs cause you to use the most energy? The fast ones? The nonstops? Some other songs? (I can play only 1 hour/day because of my mom's nerves ) To date I've only lost 2 lbs, but noticed for the first time I remember that I can walk over a mile without any problems (used to kill my feet), and that somehow felt DDR isn't only fun, but useful too .
